I'm seeing that almost 100 people have viewed this site, but very few have signed up. Now that harvest is winding down, I hope you have the opportunity to log in and share ideas on this problem. I believe that some of the risk of this problem can be addressed through dormant pruning, and we have a few months before that needs to be finished.
to put it into perspective: Viognier was planted on 224 acres in the commonwealth in 2012, among white grapes second only to Chardonnay in both acreage and tonnage.
Statewide average crop load was 2.2 T/Ac. (503 T produced) Primary bud abortion can result in yields below 1 T per acre. If bud abortion happened to everyone at once, that's a loss of 279 Tons of white fruit statewide. At 100 Gallons per Ton: 27900 Gallons or 11,625 cases of wine.
The SWD discussion board generated some very good ideas and viable options within a few months because of good participation, and I hope those successes can be replicated here.
