Our experience with Viognier bud abortion.
In the dormant season (winter 2013), there were some areas of the vineyard with thick bull canes and/or wide internode spacing. These vines were the worst in terms of bud fruitfullness.
The canopy was extremely dense, and there was a lot of variability among vines for crop level. Some vines would have 30 clusters, some would have 8. Generally, the clusters were very small.
The dense canopy was very difficult to manage during the wet summer, and it took longer to pick the 1 T/ Ac than expected. I putting in a lot of labor, chemicals, fuel, etc. for a very light crop of fruit.
