I've created this board so growers of Viognier can share their experiences with dealing with primary bud abortion.
Primary bud abortion results in:
1. Poor yield on the acre (more hours spent picking a light crop)
2. Excessive canopy growth (more vineyard labor, poor spray coverage)
3. Bull canes and difficulty pruning the following year (a vicious cycle?)
I'd like to figure out strategies, especially pruning strategies that can address this problem for what is a very popular grape in the state of Virginia. (the pruning board)
I'd also like to get input on hosting a bud-abortion specific pruning workshop at Democracy Vineyards (Lovingston VA) early in the winter. We have some blocks which were badly affected, and some which were not, so we can contrast the vines during dormant pruning. (the workshop board)
I hope this board provides us with the opportunity to cooperate an find solutions to this problem.
